First Dung Beetle sighting of the year

I was performing a quick trim on the daffodils this afternoon when I sighted my first dung beetle for the year.  I love these little guys.

So nice to see green!! We had 6 inches of snow yesterday! Spring can be such a timid thing.

My kids LOVE dung beetles, I'm sure the name has something to do with it. I'll have to show this to Quaid.

Just had to see what a dung beetle was. Are they the beetles that put their butt up in the air when threatened?

I don't know if they stick their butts up when threatened, but they do make big balls of dung, I believe to lay eggs in, if I remember correctly. I know that I did a report on beetles way back when in elementary school and dung beetles were one of the featured bugs. I'm jealous that you have them locally. Although maybe we do and I just don't know it. Thanks for the post!

Hey All,
I am sure you have dung beetles. There is a book out there about them that I have been wanting to buy. I read somewhere that in Africa if it was not for dung beetles people would be up to their knees in dung. Everything has its purpose and place in the world. Three cheers for Dung Beetles!
